As schools rapidly migrate to a remote learning environment, a learning management system built with distance education in mind is imperative. The online classroom is a mix of virtual face-to-face experiences, assignments, files, and conversations accessible on a mobile device, tablet, PC, or browser.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Moving a course from classroom to virtual classroom requires a detailed migration plan. While your class content stays the same, how you present that information might change in a remote setting. While you as an instructor maintain eye contact and control in a traditional classroom setting, the same is not true in a remote setting. For example, in the classroom you may have an insect collection you use during a science section, you must get creative to recreate that experience in a remote experience. * Do not try to recreate all the content \u2013 you might be surprised to find how much free resources are available to you. If your district does not already have digital lesson plans, google to see what you find.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

*\u00a0McGraw Hill<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 if your school uses McGraw Hill textbooks, you may have access to their online resources. If not, they also offer free ones.\u00a0<\/p>\n

*\u00a0Khan Academy<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a unique and refreshing method to teaching. Even if you do not use the curriculum, choose limited course content that reinforces your instruction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

*\u00a0Smithsonian Learning Labs\u00a0\u2013<\/a>\u00a0is the K-12 section of their online learning resources. Jam packed with\u00a0features,\u00a0their offerings will add excitement to your class activities.<\/p>\n

* Encourage Student Collaboration and Engagement<\/p>\n

*\u00a0Give student assignments that include opportunities to respond to the lesson material and then respond to peers\u2019 work\u00a0<\/p>\n

* Design assignments to incorporate at-home,\u00a0hands-on\u00a0learning\u00a0<\/p>\n

* See\u00a0commonsense.org\u00a0for more ideas\u00a0<\/p>\n

* Plan a Virtual Field Trip\u00a0<\/p>\n

* Give student assignments that include opportunities to respond to the lesson material and then respond to peers\u2019 work<\/p>\n

*\u00a0American Museum of Natural History<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 at the time of this writing, they are offering a virtual field trip called \u2018Mars Watch Party\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

* Online courses\u00a0\u2013 use these courses as the \u2018anchor\u2019 for a virtual field trip.\u00a0Or make your own trip details. Use a previously recorded field trip and incorporate into your curriculum.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other digital museum visits\u00a0such as\u00a0The St. Louis Science Museum<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

* Provide Students with Emotional Support Resources\u00a0<\/p>\n

* Anxiety\/mental \u2013 especially during COVID\u00a0\u2013 instructors and administrators may become a student\u2019s preferred confidante. If you notice unusual behavior, document\u00a0it\u00a0and try to get help.\u00a0<\/p>\n

* Instructors sometimes are more than teachers, they get involved\u00a0\u2013 there was a news article about a teacher caring for her student\u2019s newborn child because her parents were ill with COVID-19\u00a0<\/p>\n
