When we discuss LMS and LCMS, we emphasize the fact that while many think they are similar, they are in fact quite different.\u00a0The LMS and LCMS provide different functionality. The Learning Management System and the Learning Content Management System are in many ways disjointed.\u00a0Integration is key in today\u2019s learning environment.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What do we mean by disjointed? <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Traditionally, the LMS and LCMS are disjointed in the sense that the LCMS is treated as a package inside the LMS. However, if we look beyond the LMS\u2019s basic tracking of user completion and scores,\u00a0the LMS cannot\u00a0personalize<\/strong>\u00a0the experience. It also cannot control content objects, change those objects, or reuse them. The authoring system typically completes these tasks.\u00a0If they are not integrated, the LMS can only deliver the course but does not have the sophistication of the LCMS.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There are numerous authoring systems used, sometimes even within L&D groups. Most authoring software works as a standalone product, but many offer a learning delivery system as part of their offering. Taken one step further, these course delivery systems become part of the LMS!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

As technology advances and new media and delivery systems emerge, integration of the many pieces becomes problematic. Is the output SCORM or x-API, or neither? Does \u2018x\u2019 eLearning authoring tool work with \u2018y\u2019 LMS system? When we dissect SCORM, it is content\u00a0that is\u00a0massaged and packaged into a finished, deliverable product\u00a0or an\u00a0eLearning course. SCORM does not address analytics.\u00a0There is no way for the content to be personalized from the LMS.\u00a0The LMS does not\u00a0get detailed tracking data\u00a0from SCORM. SCORM does not\u00a0launch the course, track scores, or anything else.\u00a0It allows the LMS to deliver the course in a standardized manner.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Much of what we used to define SCORM happened during the time when eLearning transformed. Unfortunately, eLearning has not moved much past there. It\u00a0does not allow the LMS to\u00a0personalize<\/strong>\u00a0the experience.\u00a0The tracking from SCORM to the LMS does not allow for page level or question level details. SCORM is giving us a finished,\u00a0published eLearning course but cannot be used for course content on different courses.\u00a0there are times when we want to offer small micro learning and\u00a0times\u00a0we want to package it into a larger course; however SCORM does not\u00a0perform that well\u00a0which makes it difficult for micro learning\u00a0delivery.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Instancy was an early adopter of the technology behind eLearning and\u00a0we\u00a0were\u00a0on the board\u00a0that\u00a0quantified the specs of SCORM. We always knew there was a critical gap\u00a0because\u00a0the specifications did not address important issues,\u00a0such as the location(s) of the content, and whether the content was a reusable object. The \u2018SCO\u2019 in SCORM defines \u2018shareable\u00a0content object\u2019 which is not easy to achieve because of emerging technologies and demands from\u00a0developers\u00a0as to how they wish to receive information during their learning experience. X-API tries to address this\u00a0issue,\u00a0but\u00a0is difficult to integrate into the learning ecosystem.\u00a0X-API does not even attempt to do what SCORM does. It merely tries to solve the problem relative to data analytics. Reusability or personalization is not even considered in x-API.\u00a0It does not address the content per se. Bottom line is that it does not address the content management system and only what the learner is doing at a general level.\u00a0You can embed the x-API\u00a0calls where you want it\u00a0in the content.\u00a0It will open the door, get the data analytics you want, but it is limited to that.\u00a0It does not address content usability or reuse.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

With SCORM you can only offer the course as published. SCORM does not have the functionality to pick and choose which pieces of content you want to use for one published course. In that sense, the \u2018S\u2019 in SCORM defining \u2018shareable object\u2019 is a misnomer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
